The Respiratory System's Response to Acute Exercise

The respiratory system consists of the respiratory muscles, lungs and everything else to do with breathing. The two main responses to acute exercise are increased breathing rate and an increase in tidal volume. During Acute exercise there is a response from the respiratory system also, it responds in ways like, breathing rate increasing such as a neural response, and chemical control and also the increase of tidal volume. When your breathing rate increases we breath more frequently and deeper, this insures that there is more oxygen getting to the muscles through the blood which is pumped faster around the body. The muscles need oxygen to work effectively and efficiently. The muscles are used more to exhale as they help and ensure that air is squeezed out of the lungs as it carries waste products like carbon dioxide and nitrogen are carried out of the body as they aren't used and need to be replaced with more oxygen quicker, depending on the amount of exercise you are doing at that moment. They also bring more oxygen as I said before, they need this for the working muscles as without it they cannot function or do their job properly.

There is also an increase in Tidal volume, which refers to the quantity of air that is inhaled and exhaled with every breath. This is similar to ‘stoke volume’ in the cardiovascular system. An increase in the ‘respiration or breathing rate’ which refers to how many times a person completes an inhalation and exhalation every minute.  This is similar to ‘heart rate’ in the cardiovascular system.

This diagram shows us the pulmonary ventilation when exercise is increased, it shows how it increases at different rates of exercise like heavy, moderate and light. Its highest is 120 at heaviest intensity and its lowest is at 40 at light exercise.

The responses to acute exercise for the musculoskeletal system can be described in many ways. The skeletal system have many responses to acute exercise. It can have an increased Osteoblast activity at the points of stress, there is also an increase of synovial fluid production, this means that more synovial fluid is released into the joints also indicating there is more cushion between the joints. this is good as it prevents them from rubbing together causing friction.
